The Johnson City Press first launched its Web site on April 1, 2001, with classic Active Server Pages (ASP) and Microsoft SQL Server. In 2005, Sandusky Newspapers made the decision to have all of its newspaper properties convert their sites to PHP and MySQL. The site is a scaled-down version of the daily printed newspaper, but offers many daily stories, full obituaries, full classifieds, several section fronts, video, and an archive that dates to April 1, 2001. The Johnson City Press has become somewhat laden with advertising over the years and is currently being redesigned in a fresher CSS-based layout with more XML functionality.

This is one of the first RIAs I designed. It is an AIR app that allows the Johnson City Press' advertisers to view tearsheets of the daily printed newspaper. The app loads the current day's newspaper pages by default. The user can select a specific date from the calendar by clicking on a date and/or navigating through previous years and months. Once a calendar date is clicked, the newspaper pages for that specific date are then loaded into the Tearsheets Preview window. The user can then choose individual pages from a tree-structured list and place them in a My Tearsheets box, which will allow them to open a PDF of the full newpaper page.

At the beginning of summer 2008, wounded combat veteran and East Tennessee State University medical student Daniel McConnell drove across the country to meet the people he dedicated 11 years of his life protecting. Daniel updated a daily blog during his journey, and the Johnson City Press sponsored a special Web site reporting his blog entries, photographs and information about his trek. An interactive map was designed in Flash with buttons for each city in which Daniel stopped. The blogs were compiled into XML via a PHP / MySQL parser and loaded into Flash via ActionScript 3. Daniel's journey was a huge success and was reported by various news agencies countrywide. Daniel is now writing a book about his journey and his military career.

Alicia Schultze is an aerial dancer who lives in Los Angeles, California. She is most famous for her work with rock and roll band Motley Crue during their 2004-2005 Carnival of Sins Tour. Alicia also has performed with The Rolling Stones, Busta Rhymes and Outkast. Her site was one of the first basic flash intro and animated preloader sites I designed, so needless to say, my Flash skills have improved somewhat since that time. I also worked closely with a graphic designer to design the flash animation of Alicia unraveling in hanging silk.

This was the first Web site I ever designed. It is a tribute to the military careers of my father and late grandfather. The portion of the site devoted to my father contains photos from Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he was stationed in the early 1960s. Having traveled to Europe on two occasions to conduct interviews and research for a book I am writing on my grandfather's infantry division during World War II, this portion of the site contains a collection of photos, stories and interviews from veterans and civilians who survived the war across Europe.
